When to see a private rheumatologist
Joint pain is a common complaint, and most of it comes from strain or wear. Seeing a rheumatologist is justified when there are signs of inflammation, when several systems of the body are involved, or when blood tests have shown an immunological finding. Early diagnosis of an inflammatory disease matters, because treatment in time prevents structural joint damage. Situations in which it is worth booking a consultation:
- Swelling in one or more joints lasting more than a few weeks, especially in the joints of the hands and feet.
- Morning stiffness lasting more than half an hour and improving with movement, a typical sign of inflammation rather than wear.
- Joint pain in someone with psoriasis, or inflammatory low back pain in young adults that worsens with rest.
- Sudden attacks of pain, redness and swelling in a joint, usually the big toe or ankle, typical of gout.
- Prolonged fatigue, unexplained fever, rash, dry eyes and mouth or hair loss alongside joint pain, which may point to a systemic autoimmune disease.
- Blood tests with positive antibodies (ANA, RF, anti-CCP) or high inflammatory markers that need specialist interpretation.
- Widespread muscle and joint pain with fatigue and unrefreshing sleep, suggestive of fibromyalgia.
- An existing diagnosis of rheumatic disease and a need for follow-up, adjustment of biologic therapy or assessment of side effects.
- A wish for a second opinion before starting biologic therapy or changing a medication regimen.
A single very hot, red and swollen joint with high fever (suspected septic arthritis), sudden weakness, shortness of breath or chest pain in a patient with autoimmune disease need the emergency room, not a scheduled consultation.
What the consultation at EliteMed includes
The rheumatology consultation is a thorough meeting with a senior rheumatologist. The physician takes the history, including symptoms that seem unrelated such as a rash or dryness, examines all the joints and the skin, and interprets the existing blood tests and imaging. When needed, the patient is referred for targeted antibody tests or a joint ultrasound at the centre. The visit ends with a diagnosis or a clear work-up plan, and a treatment recommendation.
What sets the centre apart:
- Senior hospital rheumatologists. The physicians manage patients with complex autoimmune disease in hospital units and bring that experience to the clinic in Modi'in.
- A structured immunological work-up. Instead of a random panel, the rheumatologist directs the tests according to the clinical picture and interprets the results in context, including positive antibodies in healthy people.
- Biologic therapy with follow-up. Biologic and immunomodulatory therapy is matched according to Ministry of Health guidelines, including the preliminary tests, the explanation of the approval process and monitoring for side effects.
- A multidisciplinary centre. Psoriatic arthritis is treated together with the dermatologists, ultrasound-guided joint injections are performed with the orthopedic service, and kidney or eye involvement is assessed in the same building.
- No referral, no waiting list. An appointment is usually available within days, without a referral. Bring previous blood tests, imaging with reports and a medication list.
- Insurance. The consultation is recognised as a private specialist consultation and is reimbursable under most private insurance policies (Harel, Phoenix, Menora and others) and supplementary health plans, subject to policy terms.
Urgent track within 24 to 48 hours
Some rheumatological situations cannot wait weeks: a first gout attack that has not settled, a new joint swelling with fever, a flare in a patient on biologic therapy, or an abnormal antibody result that has caused real worry. For these the centre offers an urgent track with an appointment within 24 to 48 hours, at the same senior level. If the picture suggests a septic joint, a vasculitis affecting an organ, or breathing difficulty, the emergency room comes first and the consultation is arranged afterwards.
Preparing for your visit and what happens afterwards
Bring all blood tests from the past year, including inflammatory markers and antibodies if tested, joint imaging with reports, previous treatment summaries and a list of medications and supplements. Write down in advance which joints hurt, when the pain is worse, whether there is morning stiffness and how long it lasts, and photograph swelling or a rash when it appears, because it is not always visible on the day of the visit. You leave with a written summary containing the diagnosis or work-up plan, prescriptions if needed, and the recommended next step: targeted antibody tests, a joint ultrasound or injection at the centre, or the start of biologic therapy including an explanation of the process with your health fund. With your consent the summary also goes to your family doctor.

No. A private rheumatology consultation at EliteMed does not require a referral from your family doctor or a Form 17. Bring blood tests from the past year, imaging with reports, treatment summaries and a medication list, and photograph swelling or a rash when it appears, so the rheumatologist can move forward with the diagnosis at the first visit.
Not necessarily. Antibodies such as ANA also appear in completely healthy people, some at a low titre with no disease at all. The diagnosis is based on a combination of symptoms, physical examination, the type and titre of antibodies and further tests. The rheumatologist interprets the result in its clinical context and decides whether further work-up or observation alone is needed.
The fee is given when the appointment is booked, before the visit, and depends on the type of consultation and on procedures such as joint ultrasound or an injection. The consultation is recognised as a private specialist consultation and is reimbursable under most private insurance policies and health-fund supplementary plans, subject to policy terms. The centre provides an invoice and a medical summary for the claim.
